Larry Hanson

I guess it’s time for another update.  I visited with Larry Hanson this weekend in regards to the upcoming ride.  He had indicated, earlier in the year, that he would be interested in doing the ride with me.  He, more or less, confirmed that this weekend.  Larry is from Minnesota and has family in Colorado.  He plans on meeting me at Antelope Wells, New Mexico around the 20-21st of June (when we plan on kicking off this adventure).  I explained the ground crew support from Paul Hauert and Kathy Merrell and that I was working on the planned route.  Paul will pull his 3-horse slant/sleeping quarters trailer and Kathy will pull my camper with ATV.  Kathy will also be writing the documentary of the ride.  They will meet at prearranged sites for restocking supplies, etc.

As for my maps, I’m using the suggested books from the Continental Divide Trail Society.  I also am using Google Earth (excellent tool) on which I overlay the CDT as well as DeLorme TOPO USA maps ver 7.  The Delorme program also has USGS quads down to 7.5 minute size.  They both show not only backroads, but well defined trails.  I am also using the individual state recreational maps from trails.com.  They have been the best guidance.  I have the New Mexico route established and most of Colorado and Wyoming.  I’ve just started on the Idaho/Montana maps.  I’ve just started trying to plot the locations in which we will meet up with the ground crew.  That can really be established according to what kind of mileage we make each day and what an average will be.

I have most of my tack and equipment and have the 3 horses (Pepe, Zena, and Blackie).  I’ll be riding one horse, ponying another and have the 3rd as a backup, that will be kept with the ground crew.  Mark Reust (my son-in-law and farrier) will meet us on HWY I-40 as we travel to Antelope Wells, to do the initial shoeing on my horses.  The plans are for him to meet up with us, later, on the trail for the next set of shoes.  I’ll also be carrying a “boot” just in case one looses a shoe or two along the way.

Anyway…..that’s what’s up, todate.  Stay tuned for more…….
